As some of you know, our house is OLD. It was built in 1967, and though there had been some renovations done to it prior to us purchasing it, it still was in need of some serious TLC. The previous owners were apparently very fond of DIY projects. Oh...and they apparently LOVED Ikea. When we bought the house, there were Ikea "wood" floors in all of the rooms (except the living room and kitchen), Ikea kitchen cabinets, and lovely Ikea bathroom cabinets in our master bathroom (to match the Ikea mirrors, of course!). One of the first things we did when we bought the house was to get rid of the ugly floors! We covered those nasty Ikea floors with a nicer, darker (wide plank) laminate wood floor. We also repainted every room in the house, but that's another story.
In addition to the ugly floors, the house came with an old, mistreated (and horribly built!) backyard deck. The deck was an eye-sore from the beginning. We got really good at ignoring the backyard and we never really spent any time out there. However, now that we have a little one, we started to envision backyard birthday parties, swingsets, baby pools, games of chase, and more! So...we decided it was time to stop ignoring/avoiding the backyard and do something about it. I'm happy to announce that as of last week, work has commenced in our backyard. As we speak, the deck has been ripped out and a new concrete patio has been poured. Our new patio is HUGE! (It's basically the size of our old deck.) The patio will have a flagstone border when it's all said and done. We are also having the side walkway taken out and will have a new crushed granite gravel walkway poured, with large flagstone stepping stones dropped in. The walkway will run along the length of the side of our house, and then we'll have large flagstone stepping stones that arc over to our patio. We are also having the backyard completely re-sodded AND we are having a sprinkler system installed in both the backyard and frontyard. I simply cannot wait!!! The backyard will be completely transformed when it's all said and done. Here is a picture of what our backyard looked like before (with the previous owner's "junk"):
I will update this blog with pictures as our backyard starts coming together!!
